Preserving Rugby's Environment
Rugby Cement’s Lawford Road plant is currently undertaking the burning of tyres as fuel for a trial period. Emissions will be monitored before, during and after the tyre burning trial by the Environment Agency, in order to see whether the chimney output during tyre burning is hazardous. Jeremy Wright has met concerned residents, Councillors and Rugby Cement management to discuss the issue. Jeremy, who lives in Cawston, commented, "I share the worries of many of those also living near the plant or elsewhere in Rugby. I welcome Rugby Cement’s investment in our town but I expect them to be good neighbours. I have made it clear to Rugby Cement that the town’s health must come before the plant’s profitability and that’s why it is so important that the monitoring of emissions must be independent and wholly credible. I have urged management at the plant to make sure that the monitoring of emissions during the burning of tyres and coal is done transparently and that they compare like with like. I want to see fair and accurate measurement of emissions before and after the tyre burning trial and in the same conditions. We must be able to have full confidence in the Environment Agency results. We are looking for 100% reassurance from Rugby Cement and nothing less will do." Back to top .
Making Kenilworth Safer
Jeremy Wright has called for more Police officers on the streets of Kenilworth. He said "I have met many Kenilworth residents concerned about the increase in vandalism and general bad behaviour in the town, especially at Abbey Fields and Abbey End. I know from speaking to the police that those mainly responsible are a small minority of the town’s young people. We need a balanced attitude - ensuring that there are longer and more constructive sentences for teenagers who break the law and better facilities for those who don’t. Above all, we need more police officers and they must be visible, not occupied filling in Government forms. The fact is that a police presence acts as a reassurance to the law abiding and a deterrent to the criminal. There is no substitute for it. A Conservative Government would provide 300 more police officers for Warwickshire, some of whom could help make Kenilworth’s public and residential areas safer." Back to top . |
